Recently, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE PES) announced the winners of the 2018 IEEE PES Global Awards. Among them, chief technical expert of China Southern Power Grid Corporation, party committee secretary of Nanwang Research Institute and Chairman of the Board Rao Hong won the IEEE PES Uno Lamm DC Transmission Technology Contribution Award in 2018, which was the first time that China Southern Power Grid Corporation won the award. The IEEE PES Uno Lamm DC Transmission Technology Contribution Award is named after the Swedish father UnoLamm, “the father of HVDC transmission technology” and aims to recognize outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to the development and application of HVDC transmission technology worldwide. The award has always been high and competitive. The participants must be nominated by an internationally renowned expert and recommended by 5 international experts. The final winners are voted back to back through the expert committee, and a maximum of 1 person is awarded each year. The evaluation expert committee evaluated Rao Hong as "the forerunner of the optimized operation technology for UHVDC power transmission and large AC/DC power grids."
