Maritime technology company Micanti BV has applied its patented non-toxic antifouling paint to Dubai's "Lady Rasha" personnel carrier.
Thorn-D antifouling paint is an adhesive film that forms a textured surface. The adhesive film should not kill the bottom of the ship, but prevent the organism from attaching to the hull. Thorn-D antifouling paint will replace the usual hull chemical coatings. The “Lady Rasha” is owned by Dubai GGM and operates primarily in the Gulf.
According to Dr. Rick Breur, founder of Micanti, “Five years ago, I developed this non-toxic antifouling paint. This paint will form a physical barrier that blocks the special short fibers of organisms such as mussels, barnacles and seaweeds.
The basic idea behind the invention of the Thorn-D antifouling paint is that when the prickly state of the Thorn-D fiber is combined with the wind sway, the surface does not adsorb the organism. Multiple trials have been conducted in different environments and locations around the world. Tests have shown that Thorn-D antifouling paints are effective every time. While other antifouling paints are (chemical) paints that need to be replaced regularly, Thorn-D antifouling paints form a physical barrier to dirt with a life expectancy of at least five years.
In addition, Thorn-D antifouling paint will be used as a self-adhesive foil that is easy to stick, rather than a (chemical) paint. The self-adhesive foil was developed in collaboration with Avery Dennison. Another characteristic of the self-adhesive foil is that its physical properties are environmentally friendly.
