The British "Natural Biomedical Engineering" magazine recently published a new online report, said the United States scientists have developed a new device similar to the "microscopic tube maze", just a drop of blood can quickly detect sepsis. This test method is fast, cheap, and accurate, making it easy to monitor patients at risk of sepsis.

Sepsis is a fatal disease. When pathogenic bacteria or conditional bacteria invade the blood circulation and grow, the patient's body will respond extremely to serious infections and cause tissue and organ damage. However, according to statistics, about 30% of patients will be misdiagnosed. This is because the specificity of human detection methods at the present stage is poor and slow. It takes several days to produce results, causing doctors to prescribe unnecessary antibiotics. Causes the proliferation of antibiotic resistant strains.

In this regard, Daniel Elimia, a scientist at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and his colleagues designed a new detection device. They dropped a drop of blood into a "maze" device consisting of microscopic tubes, and then used a machine learning algorithm to correlate the movement of neutrophils in the maze with the severity of sepsis. Neutrophils have chemotaxis, phagocytosis, and bactericidal effects and are at the forefront of the body's invasion of microbial pathogens, as are the "first-aid workers" of the immune system. Through its special association with sepsis, the device can calculate a "sepsis score."

The researchers showed that the test takes only a few hours, and in a double-blind observational study of 42 patients, healthy individuals can be distinguished from patients with sepsis based on sepsis scores, with a sensitivity and specificity of more than 95%.

At present, the method needs to be validated by a larger and more diverse group of patients, but the researchers said that this new result still has the potential to improve the survival rate of patients at high risk of sepsis, while reducing the overuse of antibiotics. .

Improvements in microscopy make it more difficult for cells to escape the doctor’s eyes. It can be expected that there will be more sophisticated machine eyes in the future, which will help us to understand the truth. Until then, no matter whether it is a mysterious pathogen, an irritable immune cell, or a tumor cell, it will be promptly controlled without accidentally injuring the healthy body. It's great.
