Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the pancreas, so the body will stop making insulin. Diagnosing type 1 diabetes is expensive and time-consuming because doctors need markers for blood-specific proteins, and sometimes it takes weeks to get results, which can delay treatment. But researchers at Stanford University in the United States have used nanotechnology to create a microchip that can diagnose type 1 diabetes in minutes.

"With the new tests, we not only expect to be more effective and diagnose diabetes more broadly, but we will also better understand diabetes," Endocrinologist Brian Feldman said in a press release. The chip uses a fluorescence-based method to detect antibodies in the blood, and a special coating with gold accentuates the fluorescence response, helping the doctor to quickly determine the nanoparticle-sized islands that make up the array.
Each chip is expected to cost about $20 and can be used more than 15 times. Researchers are waiting for approval from the US Bureau of Management and commercializing it. Type 1 diabetes testing is generally used in almost completely confirmed patients. The incidence of type 1 diabetes has been increasing worldwide for the past few years for unknown reasons. "This has great potential to be discovered before they become ill and prevent diabetes, or prevent its complications, as well as early treatment," Feldman said.
