[China Instrument Network Instrument Development] Kiruna, the northern city of Sweden in the Arctic Circle, a tourist destination known for its iron ore and snow and ice world. At the end of 2016, the China Aerospace Center at the Earthquake Receiving Station of the China Remote Sensing Satellite Ground Station passed the acceptance test and was put into trial operation.

The North Pole Station is located at 67o53' north latitude and 21o04' east longitude, 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. It is China's first overseas land satellite receiving station. The first time people see pictures of the Arctic station immersed in the Aurora, there will be people Lament its beauty. However, only those who have experienced the construction process know the antenna that looks into the sky and how many people's wisdom and sweat are gathered.

From November 21st to December 4th, 2016, Wei Hongwei, chief designer of the data receiving system at the Arctic Receiving Station of the Remote Sensing Satellite Ground Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Lin Botao, the Arctic receiving station Wan Guangtong, the chief designer of the data recording system, came here to perform the sub-system test tasks before the pilot operation of the Arctic Station.

The Arctic Station does not have accommodation, and everyone lives in a hotel located in the Kiruna Space Center, a few kilometers from the Arctic Station. This made everyone secretly glad that because of the busy business center in winter, the hotel was basically full in previous years. If you want to live in the city of Kiruna, it takes more than 40 kilometers to go to the station one way.

40 kilometers is not far away, but in the Arctic Circle it is another story. In the snow, the snow will cover the windows in an instant and the roads will be completely covered, often failing to find the direction of travel. The Kiruna will slowly enter the polar night from the beginning of October. At the end of November, every morning at 9 am, it will be dark at 2 pm. As soon as it is dark, the sight is more blurred. It takes at least 2 to 3 hours a day for a round trip in the snow.

The Arctic Station is an unattended station. Apart from the antenna system, the station has only a 44-square-meter room. The engine room is a closed square cabin with seven equipment cabinets, two air conditioners, two file cabinets, one power distribution cabinet, one UPS control cabinet, and one set of high-power battery packs and other items. Packed full.

This is where testers work.

"It's not that it's narrow and it doesn't matter, it's mainly noisy. It can reach 110 decibels at the highest, which is equivalent to the propeller's sound when the plane takes off." Wei Hongwei said, "We can't wear ear muffs yet, because we have to talk and we have to discuss the problem. We are also accustomed to being slow. After all, we have to wait for a short time, and the construction party will stay for two months."

The North Pole Station is built overseas. Everyone here comes with a bunch of "hard tasks." This requires everyone to not only be alone, but also be versatile. The main task of Wei Hongwei and others was the last system test before the trial run. Several people did not dare to loosen up.

"With such a large-scale system project, there will always be a sparse situation in this working environment." Wei Hongwei said frankly, "In this case, one is to prepare the plan in advance, the other is to do everything possible, and the third is to see the machine. Actually, everyone is a system tester, a software and hardware engineer, and occasionally guest electric workers, welders, snow sweepers, of course, must be drivers, cooks."

On one occasion, the equipment in the center of the antenna center had a point of failure, and it was necessary to climb into the body of the antenna center that was more than 10 meters high for maintenance. At the time the snow had just finished, the outdoor temperature was minus 20°C, and the snow falling on the center body door melted and then became ice.

When the staff climbed onto the central body, it was found that the door was frozen and could not be opened, and the ice was uncovered for 20 minutes. In order not to delay the progress of the project, the staff climbed up again with the heater, held the heater and baked 2 hours of ice outside the door before successfully opening the hatch and carrying out maintenance work.

“We took this day and took it one day.” Weihong Wei said, “Bitters must be bitter, but we can witness the completion of such a big project overseas and we feel particularly proud of it.”

A few days later, the hard work of Wei Hongwei and others paid off. After two years of construction, the Arctic Station with all-weather, all-day, multi-resolution satellite receiving capabilities will further expand China’s ability to receive global remote sensing data and help China take another big step towards the dream of a powerful remote sensing country. .
