Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Photonics in Erlangen discovered a new mechanism for light guiding in photonic crystal fiber (PCF). Photonic crystal fiber is a hair-like glass fiber, the structure of the center along its length along the regular arrangement of hollow channels. Being able to control the optical properties of a material is very useful in a wide variety of applications. Photonic crystal fibers developed by Philip Russell and his team at the Max Planck Institute in Erlangen can be used to filter the visible spectrum at specific wavelengths or to produce ultra-white light. As with all optical fibers used in telecom, all conventional photonic crystal fibers have a core and cladding having different refractive index or optical properties. At PCF, air-filled channels give the glass a different index of refraction than full solid glass.
