Dow Corning installed a new two-stage vacuum pump at a processing plant in its chemical production complex in Midland, Michigan, which pumps the gas from the processing reactor. The vacuum pump used a traditional mineral oil designated by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), and a serious failure occurred every four to six weeks during the initial nine months of operation of the pump. “The corrosion is very strong and the pump casing is rusty. What we have to do is not just repairing,” says assembly engineer Lisa Honaman. “Every time, we have to buy new pump casings and other major components, and then spend Reload the pump in one or two days."

Dow Corning's technical service personnel suspect that harmless lubricants can eliminate or alter the corrosion of metal pump components by eliminating or altering the reaction of additives and gases, thereby improving performance. Therefore, they recommended low additive mineral oils. Honaman was pleasantly surprised to find that her own company, Dow Corning, had a solution. Dow Corning has just introduced a new line of industrial lubricants under the trademark “Molik”, and the L-0610 vacuum pump oil meets the requirements. This ultra-high purity mineral oil is based on a new low additive chemistry technology that minimizes the reaction rate of chemicals and gases. Honaman says, “This additive is very mild and contains a formulation that is completely free of additives.” It is this proprietary additive combination that reduces the rate of oxidation of new oils, which are produced by increased pressure and temperature. And can lead to premature lubrication failure.

Solvent refined mineral oils with conventional zinc-based antiwear agents have a higher initial total acid number (TAN). Honaman said: "With water and hydrogen, you can even get sulfuric acid."

By comparison, the Morik brand mineral oil does not contain zinc-based chemicals and has a low initial TAN value. At the same time, since the sulfur content is less than 5 ppm, its anti-rust and anti-oxidation additive is virtually free of sulfur, so the oil is a harmless product and is very suitable for use. Moreover, specially designed chemicals give them better resistance to oxidation and demulsibility, which allows them to last up to five times longer than conventional oils.
